APPLICATION

The Market Street School is a fully online alternative to the traditional in-person classroom experience for students in grades 1-12. 

o The program is offered through a collaborative partnership between Johnson City Schools and Pearson, a notable name in education with 20+ years of experience in online schools. Pearson Online School Partnership Information 

o Instruction and coursework are delivered virtually using Pearson's academically challenging courses and supportive Tennessee-certified teachers.  These courses utilize the same state curriculum standards required of all public schools in Tennessee, and graduation requirements are the same as those required of other Market Street School (28 credits).  A Market Street School diploma is awarded upon the completion of those requirements.

o Market Street School is an academically rigorous program that requires high levels of reading comprehension, student autonomy, and perseverance.  While some flexibility is a sought-after benefit of this program, students are expected to log in daily, maintain adequate grades, make satisfactory progress, and participate in communication with educators.  Failure to adhere to these core expectations may result in dismissal from the program.

This program is:

• • A fully online alternative to the traditional in-person classroom experience.
  • Flexible in terms of when the students work on their asynchronous learning during the day. Course start & end dates are firm.
  • Partnered with Pearson for academically-rigorous course offerings and TN-certified teachers who offer optional live sessions, small group interventions, and individualized appointments.
  • Using the same TN state curriculum standards that all other Johnson City (and TN) schools use.
  • Will provide extracurricular opportunities through. Please see the FAQ regarding sports participation while enrolled at Market Street School.

• This school is not the program formerly known as "JCS Virtual Learning Program".  This is a school offering online learning program with expectations that require high levels of reading comprehension, student autonomy, and self motivation.
• This school is not meant to be used as a behavior, truancy, or credit recovery solution.  Again, this school consists of academically challenging coursework that requires high levels of self-discipline, time management, and academic perseverance.  As such, it is generally not a good fit for students with multiple discipline problems, truancy issues, or significantly low credits.
• This program is not affiliated with Science Hill - Market Street Campus programs (formerly known as Topper Academy).
• This program is not the same as "homeschool".  While school work is done from home with this program, participants are enrolled students of Johnson City Schools Market Street School with certified Pearson teachers facilitating courses.

• Common accommodations, such as extended time on assignments, smaller group settings, frequent breaks, preferential seating, read aloud, etc. are essentially built into the flexibility of the program and the in-home environment.
• Pearson teachers will have access to student IEP, 504, or ILP plans in order to make appropriate accommodations to coursework, but they are not involved with direct special education services to students.
• Students with IEPs, 504, and ILP plans who require direct services must schedule those services with Johnson City Schools special education case managers at Market Street School.
